Malassezia Folliculitis AKA Fungal Acne

THis is what fungal acne looks like:

Itchy Uniform

Bumps

commonly located on the forehead, chest, neck, and back.

WHAT CAUSES FUNGAL ACNE??

MALASSEZIA YEASTS ARE A NORMAL PART OF HUMAN SKIN MICROBIOME, BUT for some people, THEY GROW OUT OF CONTROL. Malassezia grows into hair follicles AND CAUSES INFLAMMATION AND INFECTION.

RESTORING BALANCE BETWEEN MALASSEZIA YEASTS AND THE REST OF THE MICROBIOME IS KEY TO CLEARING FUNGAL ACNE.

2 STRATEGIES TO HELP REBALANCE THE MICROBIOME:

  1. Suppress malassezia growth Via antifungals (topically or orally)

    • Use anti dandruff shampoos as a mask for 5 minutes then rinse. Looks for shampoos that contain ANTIFUNGALS such as ketoconazole and zinc pyrithione

    • Talk to your DERMATOLOGIST to get PRESCRIPTION grade topical or oral antifungals

  2. The second strategy is a two prong approach:

    • “Starve” the Malassezia Yeasts by avoiding ingredients that feed the fungus AND

      • ingredients that feed fungal acne - Fatty acids, esters, lipids, fatty alcohols (Check your products at sezia.co)

    • Treat inflammation and bumps via anti-inflammatory and exfoliating products

      • abeo skin face wash is both ANTI-inflammatory (berberine) and exfoliates the skin (salicylic acid) :)
